5 out of 5 stars Great return to quality urban fantasy   January 31, 2008

The D'Artigo sisters, Camille, Delilah and Menoly, are half-human, half-Faerie operatives for the Otherworld Intelligence Agency and each have a book in this series. This one involes disappering humans turning up as newly born vampires and is thus Menolly's (an acrobat turned vampire) story. The Delilah book (Changeling) was weak after a strong start in the Camille story (Witchling). This is much better and possibly the best of all 3.
The idea of Menolly dealing with fears and going out to confront her sadist sire Dredge for turning humans into vampires felt very real in terms of the emotional impact. I see Menolly as the most 'outside' of the 3 sisters - the others are born with their powers, Menolly's have been forced upon her, and this is a satisfying book in terms of the way that Menolly starts to move forward, creating new, intimate relationships as well as looking at her existing family ones.
I also enjoy that these stories don't hesitate to deal with differing sexualities - one sister is in a relationship with a human, one in a relationship with 2 different men (and a dragon!) and one with women and men.
I look forward to No 4 in the series.
