4 out of 5 stars A good but flawed artbook of the cthulhu mythos   February 27, 2008

Wow, I thought a book about the art of the mighty cthulhu mythos! And it is. Its a very good book. The problem I have that makes it flawed is that the artwork is mostly graphical in nature and this is not surprising as much of the artwork (99.5%) has been lifted from the artwork found in products such as gaming cards, roleplaying and board games made by Fantasy Flight Games. The other 0.5% is from Chaosium - itself a rpg company. I am not knocking these companies for their excellent artists and illustrators, nor am I saying that these companies have flawed the cthulhu mythos - quite the opposite - they have brought the works of Lovecraft and his circle into a more public domain.

What is a pity is that there are hundreds of novel covers and game covers, amateur publications and magazines that haven't had the chance to be exposed in such an art book. Quite excellent artworks and line illustration. I feel its been a bit of a cop out.

The artwork covered is good, the cover to the book is one of the best depictions of the mighty Cthulhu I have ever seen (its why I bought the book - thinking there was more of such high quality inside).

So be warned this is good, but there will be an artwork book of Cthulhu that will be the definitive book and this isn't it - maybe when the stars are right?!
