not that impressed November 13, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I'm a GP doing basically what Dr London does day to day. I found him slightly smug and patronising and not particularly funny. Bedside stories and in stitches are much better at showing the real life medical world here in the UK
Mixum gatherum. November 9, 2007 I enjoyed most of these. I have bought the book for medical friends. They also liked it, as the curate's egg; good in parts. It is just a tad American but quite true to life regarding the foibles of both doctor and patient. Some vignettes are hilarious; others twee. Well worth a read but mainly for "med-heads".
Doctors need more of this sort of book... April 26, 2006 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
It has very dry humour and you will definitely "get it" if you're a doctor, and most likely if you work in healthcare with The Public at large. OK, some of the situations are a bit sickly-sweet, but he's aiming this at as wide an audience as possible and, frankly, there should be much, much more of this sort of humour aimed at doctors and the like. I cannot rate this, and others like it, too highly. All docs should have these sorts of books in their loo.
Not funny if you are not American July 30, 2001 33 out of 43 found this review helpful
This book has a lot of potential to be funny. But it wasn't, at least not to me. Maybe that is because I am not a doctor, working in private practice in a reasonably affluent part of the US. And I am not familiar with doctors who are working in private practice in a reasonably affluent part of the US. Or maybe it's just me. The book is madeup of 57 short essays, containing humourous advice, aimed at doctors. However, the stories are about filling in insurance forms, playing golf, how your receptionist should behave, not joining a partnership. And most of them mean nothing to me.
The good doctor gives a curative dose of humor. June 3, 1999 2 out of 6 found this review helpful
Though I am a non-physician health care professional, I think non-medical people will enjoy this book as well. I laughed so hard I cried, as did the friends to whom I was reading.
