Negi Springfield's good intentions backfired big time, and now he's been arrested and about to be turned into an ermine.

The sixteenth volume of "Negima" opens on that rather dark note, and though Ken Akamatsu injects some comic relief, it stays pretty suspenseful and action-packed. Don't expect much resolution, though -- Negi and Co. are only starting their quest against Chao.

The machinations of Chao end up pitting Asuna, Setsuna, Kaede and the others against some very angry wizards, including Takane. In his cell, Negi is filled in on what has happened in the week he was gone -- right before Asuna and Fei Ku invade to rescue him. Unfortunately, they bump right into a three-headed wolf and a savage gryphon -- and Takahata.

Even after finding out their enemy's true identity, they have to rescue Negi from his cell, and somehow turn back time to the last day of the Mahorafest. Too bad the clock isn't working. They head to the World Tree's roots to use the last of its power -- but even if they make it back in time, can the wizards defeat Chao's Martian robots?

The sixteenth "Negima" is all about the action -- it starts the volume, and pretty much continues through to the end. Akamatsu stops every now and then to give us quieter moments (Negi naps for awhile) -- but mostly it's about full scale battles with mages, robots, dragons and monsters.

And he loads it down with plenty of kinetic battles, full of magic, trickery and big bad swords. But he throws in some comedy -- mostly nudity and slapstick -- as well as some more philosophical moments. If a person tried to help the world by doing something devastating, would you be on their side? Akamatsu leaves it up to the readers to decide.

Having been the center of the last few volumes, Negi spends most of this one napping or sitting in a cell. Instead, Asuna and Yue take a lot of the spotlight, fighting in full armor or outwitting their opponents. And we get to see the more human sides of some of the wizards, like Gandolfini (who is seen drinking himself into a stupor), and an old teacher of Setsuna's.

The sixteenth volume of "Negima" ratchets up the action to eleven -- and leaves you wondering what Negi and his pals are going to do. But it's an excellent, action-packed ride while it lasts.
