Shamanic Reiki June 19, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Some people believe that marrying up two different healing techniques should not be done. Indeed I was taught that any such thing is utter nonsense and I should not even contemplate it. Luckily I am a little more broadminded than that. I am so glad I read this book, Shamanism has always intrigued me, and I am a level 2 Reiki practitioner. The combination of these two disciplines makes perfect sense, and the way this is introduced in this book makes their joint healing power so easily accessible.
This book shows that there is indeed great wisdom in the convergence of two different disciplines, and that infact they can complement and improve one another. Inevitably, unless someone knows different, these two disciplines use the same unknown spiritual energy source. So why not mix and match a little to see what works better. Mikao Usui only 'discovered' Reiki not very long ago. In my mind he simply found a way to tap into the energy that Shamanic Healers have been using for many millenia.
Shamanic Reiki is a fantastic book. I would recommend it to anybody who studies, uses or is interested in any spiritual healing. THe book is well written, easy to understand and thoughtful. A fabulous read.

The marriage between Reiki and Shamanism is so obvious that the thought never even occurred to me. My shelves are lined with books on various types of Reiki, a bunch of Joseph Campbell (Journey of the Hero) like books, and a nice selection of personal journey, self help titles. In my Reiki practice, I have always encouraged my clients to use Reiki as a tool to self understanding. My position is that true healing comes from self acceptance and resonance with the genuine self. I don't know why I didn't see the connection sooner.
Reading Shamanic Reiki gave me a profound ah-ha moment. I've always felt that Reiki didn't quite describe what I do and what I believe that my clients need. In the past, I've been frustrated by individuals who simply want me to cure their ills. I know that the energies can relieve their pain. I also know that by continuing the same life patterns, these same individuals will soon find themselves in the exact same position. I've always thought that Reiki should be used not only to relieve the clients concerns but also as a way to understand the root of the problem.
Now I see that the authors of Shamanic Reiki suggest exactly this. They seek to ask more of both the practitioner and the client. This involves a partnership of sorts, a commitment to healing and personal growth on the part of both parties. This is the kind of practitioner I want to be.
Please don't hodge-podge traditions together! March 22, 2008 5 out of 11 found this review helpful
Reiki is originally a tightly Japanese tradition that was exported around the world by one of its famous students to America where it filtered out to the rest of the world.
This was a good and a very bad thing at the same time. For one it helped Reiki to spread and survive outside Japan, but bad because this sort of book happened to it. People lumping it together with everything and anything they see fit.
I don't understand why alternative practitioners and faiths feel the need to cobble a term to add to Reiki! You wouldn't see a book named Wiccan Kabbalah (even though that market has gone the same way)because even though its tenets are absorbed into the path we see the pure forms as separate but encompassing.
Shamanism is a European tradition that is often incorrectly labelled as Native-American by people who just want to stick labels on things. I can understand you using the Energies of Reiki within different traditions such as Shamanism which has its own healing tradition through journeying.
But please don't take two terms together and create an oxymoron. Reiki is not Shamanism and vice-versa. They can be used within a holistic regime but then they would not be Reiki nor Shamanism but something new and different.
