you need to buy this! April 20, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
hand down the best book i have ever read in my life. a must have for any eels fan, this book will put you through every emotion possible, i am generally a very detached person but i had a tear in my eye when he writes about his sister and mother's death. if your not into emotional stuff dont be put off by that, this book made me laugh loads as it is full of witty antidotes which had me laughing out loud, this book adds even more meaning to all his songs and you understand where lyrics came from and what was going on in his life when he wrote them. It was such a great experience to hear "the chet" (eels guitarist) read out parts of the book when i went to see them live at the Birmingham town hall. A must have, i rate this very highly!!! (eels rock)
One of the best books I've ever read April 14, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
He's always been one of the most honest lyricists and his writing here is no different. Unflinchingly blunt about the personal tragedies in his life and the seemingly countless misfortunes he has witnessed, he somehow weaves them all into a life-affirming and at times, blackly comic memoir. I love his music, his live shows are mesmerising and now I'm a fan of his book.
An insightful page turner April 11, 2008 Mark Everett is a great, creative musician, as is borne out by the undoubted appreciation he enjoys. He is what I would call a survivalist exponent of musical expression as therapy. He transcends the traumatic, tragic fabric of his life weaving it into a cathartic, rather uplifting and honestly straightforward account of how creativity and expression can heal or at least transmute abject misery into purposeful living.
It is difficult to put this one down. Almost everyone would get something out of this book.
Poignant April 6, 2008 This is a great book for Eels fans and particularly anyone interested in E. At times sad and darkly humourous; the most interesting chapters are when he deals with the personal tragedies that have beset his life and in the stories behind the albums he has created. E is a maverick and his music so incredibly original that this book may have wider scope. The only negative would be the tendancy for self indulgence, but hey- he is a rock star after all!
Most inspiring read of my life March 28, 2008 This was an amazing book-truthful and as honest as some one can be, Mr E from the Eels poured his heart and soul into this book about the hardships of his life, his many loves and the lessons we constantly learn each day. I loved this book so much that I even bought my friends a copy each so they could read it.
