5 out of 5 stars A newcomers view to a book thats a must for all collectors   February 6, 2003

This book was recommended to me after enquires on how to start collecting medals. All collectors are aware that this is an annual publication that is bought as not only a reference source, but as a guide to sellers and owners on values of their medals. Published by Token Publishing Limited, this is their ninth annual publication and starts with a review of the previous years news and main events. Then looks at the market trends. The best information that I found from the start of reading this yearbook was the section titled "Beginner beware" - 4 pages of advice on how not to make mistakes was very useful. Also at the beginning of this publication is general information on wearing, order of medals as well as other areas of interest such as ribbons and minatures. Then starts the deeper information sections with Orders of Chivalry - This is nearly an all colour section detailing information such as when the order was instituted, the ribbon information as well as the associated details of the garter, chains sashes, etc. A value section at the bottom of each description indicates the values of each item. The rest of the yearbook follows the same pattern, but the images are in black & white, rather than full colour and are within sections within a main area. After the Orders of Chivalry is the Decorations starting from the Victoria Cross to the King's Medal for Native Chiefs. This leads to mentions and commendations explanations before a Campaign Medal section featuring medals dating from 1758, both war periods and finishing with UN medals. The remaining sections cover Long and Meritorious Service medals, Coronation and Jubilee medals, Miscellaneous medals, unoffical medals, medals for saving life, Canadian medals, Malaysian medals, Singapore medals, South African medals and Sri Lanka medals. To the rear of the yearbook comes a valuable section of abbreviations and initials, current regiments, researching your medals, societies for medal collectors and Museums,Collections and fairs. To finish the yearbook off they have a cumulative index to Medal News and a colour section of medal ribbons. In total 488 pages of information, although every few pages there are advertisements of mainly dealers, but even I found these as an information source! My overall thoughts are that a collector cannot be without one, and to those just interested in medals - still cannot be without it!
