3 out of 5 stars Very scholarly but difficult for the student   October 18, 2006

I am studying Medieval Dream Poetry this semester, and this was the text recommended by our tutor. There are plenty of good reasons to buy this text: it is a reasonable price, easy to handle with good print, and above all the scholarly notes, introductions, and the editing of the texts are all excellent.

BUT (and for me this is a big but) it is very difficult for a student new to the area to use. There is no translation in this edition (there is in an earlier one), no vocabulary notes accompanying each line, and no systematic translation of lines in the footnotes. There is a substantial glossary, but this makes reading a case of skipping around the book; in effect the reader has to make their own translation. While this may be no problem for someone experienced in the area and familiar with the language, it created huge problems for me. I eventually had to resort ot an old translation and read the two together.

I would suggest that, if you want the texts as edited here, get the edition with the translation (although our tutor did advise that it was not the best translation out there) Alternatively, use this book, but keep another translation to hand. I would have happily given the book 4 or 5 stars, were it not for its limitations as regards new students of the subject.
