3 out of 5 stars Quite helpful book, very expensive therapy   August 6, 2008

I've been treated by Dr Ray Perrin (NB he's not a medical doctor). His book gives some help but is designed mainly for health professionals (as Ray told me) so see a Perrin Technique therapist if you have ME and want benefit yourself. Beware, it is incredibly expensive and will take 1 to 2 years at up to 65 for 30 mins/week, plus the supplements he recommends.

If you have ME and don't want Perrin to exploit you for 2 years:
- skip his 200 consultation - I learned the same during standard treatment anyway, and the theory is in his book if you forget. Skipping consultation will save you his awful questionnaire he's concocted to "tell you" whether you have ME, not depression. Err, tell me something we don't know... Man, I paid 200 for that!
- See a trained therapist (not Perrin he's 1/3 more expensive) a few times to learn it properly, then carry on without the therapist, as I have.

He personally diagnosed me as 2 yrs to recovery. I'm still on track without the expense of a therapist's time for 2 years (up to 5000) using, in order of significance to my health:
- an alkaline diet (vegetables detox the body, eg Vasey's book 2nd Ed);
- self analysis & learning to relax (challenging my self beliefs that create & uphold ill health habits)
- posture improvements & gentle chi kung
- Perrin self massage;
Hope this helps - best wishes to all others experiencing ME - it is beatable but it requires US to change: there is no magic pill, but Reverse Therapy sounds pretty intriguing...

5 out of 5 stars great!   May 14, 2008

i have recently been diagnosed with 'post viral fatigue' and this book is easily the most informative and extensive thing i've been able to find.
it is detailed without being unreadable with medical jargon (it even has medical terms glossary).

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book   February 25, 2008

I found this book excellent. It gives a general idea of the different points of view on CFS/ME and then it explains Mr Perrin's research. It also describes the physical indications common to people with this illness and what is the Perrin Technique treatment. This book describes Mr Perrin's theory in a very clear and logic way. I recommend it to anybody with CFS/ME.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, practical account of how to treat ME   February 12, 2008

This book gives a very useful account of how those who suffer from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/ME can improve their lives. Osteopathy, as all of us who have been fortunate enough to experience it know, is not just about backs. Osteopaths can successfully treat a very wide range of other problems and ailments, as this book proves. Raymond Perrin is to be congratulated on his excellent work with his patients.

5 out of 5 stars The Perrin Technique   July 26, 2007

In his book, 'The Perrin Technique', Dr. Raymond Perrin presents a compelling and fascinating profile of his work and research in the highly contentious field of M.E./C.F.S. Dr Perrin, an osteopath currently based in Manchester, happened upon, almost by chance, several fundamental anatomical problems exclusive to M.E./C.F.S. patients which can be used as a reliable method of diagnosing, and hence, treating the condition - something which no other treatment is capable of doing at this moment in time.

As an M.E./C.F.S. sufferer myself, this book has proved an invaluable source of information. It provides practical advice for M.E./C.F.S. patients on day-to-day living in critical areas such as diet, exercise and toxicity in our everyday environment. The book is easily comprehensible even by those, such as myself, who know nothing of medical terminology, thanks to its detailed and carefully constructed explanations. Even when such terminology is unavoidable, the reader is aided by a thorough glossary of terms at the rear of the book and diagrams where appropriate. In a world where many still believe the disease to be psychological in origin (and diagnosis relies on a vague set of exclusionary tests), Dr. Perrin's hypothesis involving the complex biological mechanics of M.E./C.F.S is highly refreshing indeed.

'The Perrin Technique' is nothing if not thoroughly fastidious in its coverage of M.E./C.F.S. In the early chapters of the book, Dr. Perrin looks at the many ways in which the illness is defined and, of course, the other possible diagnoses which conjure up similar symptoms to M.E./C.F.S. Dr. Perrin then expands upon this in explaining his findings, notably the role of the sympathetic nervous system in M.E./C.F.S., the importance of toxins in the developmental stages of the illness, before revealing the final steps which lead to this debilitating condition. In the final chapters of the book, Dr. Perrin describes several routine exercises (with photographic illustration for further clarification) that the patient can perform on a daily basis to help improve their condition, including advice on recovery and prevention. This is backed up throughout the book by case studies giving examples of some of the numerous patients Dr. Perrin has treated over the years, chronicling their original presentation and subsequent journey to full recovery.

I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending this remarkable book to anyone interested in M.E./C.F.S., whether as a sufferer, a friend/family member of someone who has the condition or a medical professional. In a market swamped by 'me too' books on the subject, cashing in on sufferers desperate for a cure, it's not difficult to imagine this book being regarded as the definitive 'M.E. Bible' in the future.
