5 out of 5 stars Geneen is a life-saver   June 4, 2008

I cannot rate this book and in fact all of Geneen Roth's books too highly. Just when you think that you are being driven crazy by the diet-binge-diet cycle, just when you think you are the only person who is suffering from this nightmare, along comes Geneen. As she says there is nothing that she can hear about emotional eating that doesn't match the despair she went through before she said 'enough is enough.' I feel liberated and inspired by her writing and much calmer and have a much better relationship with food now than ever before. Pleae be aware that the changes that Geneen talks about will take time and loads of patience so don't expect instant results. But when the results both physically and mentally do come they are well worth waiting for.

5 out of 5 stars Finally someone who understands   May 27, 2008

This book has been an amazing help to me. It is so reassuring to know that there are others who feel the same as I do and that there is a way out. The book is written in a very down to earth style and really just seems like a lot of common sense when you read it. The exercises suggested are easy to follow. This book has made a big difference to my life and I highly recommend it to anyone who has problems with overeating.

4 out of 5 stars May have been five stars if i had been a binge eater   February 14, 2008

I was only looking for some thing to tell me why I over ate and help me stop, rather than a cure for bulimia or cyclically gorging and over-exercising, but I still found thsi book helpful, though I was not its target audience.
Alot of what she says makes sense and explains why we do eat what we know will make us fat, even thinking the uncomfortably unthinkable- we may deep down need the extra pounds to make us comfortable in our selves, for example. Brave thing to say to life long dieters!
What makes this s a stand out among self help books is ta the author makes it clear she is not 'cured' and occasionally relapses into old habits when her guard is down.
Only falls short of five stars because she constantly refers to how ghastly she looked at 145 pounds, which, for a potential readership of women over 245 pounds, is a bit hurtful.

5 out of 5 stars Throw out your diet books and have this one instead!   August 11, 2007

I bought this book on the recommendations of the previous reviewers and weren't those people right! It is a very honest but funny account of 'emotional eating' that you cannot help but relate to, if you struggle with this - but the most important thing is how much sense it makes - no ambitious ideas, just straight forward 'back to basics' that simply require you to dig a little deeper inside yourself, not your purse for changes. I think there is a lesson in this book for all of us, regardless of our size, to be a bit kinder and more forgiving to ourselves. Buy this - you will not be sorry!
