Utterly thrilling May 2, 2008 This is one of the very best thrillers I have ever read. The action is non-stop and the tension is relentless. It's an absolute masterclass of plotting and characterisation - even after all these years I can remember particular scenes because they have been rendered so utterly convincingly. This book starts with a bang and keeps on delivering right up to the nerve-shredding ending. There are no slow parts, no bits that you will skim, you will be glued to every single word. Believe the hype - this is one action-packed thriller that you won't want to put down and will read again and again.
one of the best ever July 24, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
It is funny but this book and another one with a similar title (Allan Folsom's "Day after tomorrow") remain for me among the 5 best thrillers I have ever read (and I think I have read hundreds of not thousands between Ludlum, Forsyth, Follett, Connelly etc ...). Even many years after reading it, I still remember this story of a bunch of terrorists attacking a nuclear missile silo. Vividly told, great characters, action, twists and turns (this black guy who can't read is a find !). Really this book is perfect.
The Real Thing November 2, 2002 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
This is probably the definitive action-thriller. By limiting himself chiefly to one location over the space of one day, Hunter sets himself a challenge he more than matches. Relentlessly action-packed, with enough military know-how and hardware to fight a medium sized war, this is classic Hunter and dwarfs all other comers in the action field. Besides the blistering pace and thrills, Hunter also manages to cram in a psychological depth and humanity often lacking in the genre. Classic thriller writing you can re-read again and again. Not to be missed, and never to be forgotten.
The horror, the horror October 30, 2002 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
A masterclass in thriller writing from beginning to end. Alongside Hunter's POINT OF IMPACT, probably the most perfect action thriller ever written. With most of the action centred on a single location on a single day, Hunter sets himself a challenge he more than meets. With more action than a hundred lesser thrillers, flawless plotting and brilliant characterisation, this is a breathless read to return to again and again.
apocalypse now! July 12, 2002 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
What a book this is, i've read a few book by this author but for sheer thrills this one tops the lot, in fact i would say it would give any one of Matthew Reilly's books a run for its money. What we have is a group of disaffected russians, traitors, viet-cong, tunnels rats, special forces, nuclear weapons and scientist all having a date with destiny atop a mountain in the middle of America. This book speeds by like a run-away loco and the tension builds right to the end, it would be a crime if the publisher did not do a 2nd print run so more people can be blown away by this cracking thriller.
