With the success of films' Sin City' and '300' - celluloid adaptations of his own graphic novels - Frank Miller has become a very famous name indeed, but it's easy to forget the man started out in comics. He hit the big time with perennial classic 'The Dark Knight Returns', and with 'All Star Batman & Robin', he returns to the character that made his name. You see, Miller understands the Batman and he has a way of writing for him like no-one else. There's a moment early on in this dramatic retelling of Robin's origin where we see the violent joy that Bruce Wayne gets from being "the goddamn Batman", and it takes the breath away. Of course, this moment is made exponentially more intense thanks to the incredible artwork of penciller Jim Lee, inker Scott Williams and colourist Alex Sinclair. This "triple threat", as they are referred to in the introduction by DC editor Bob Schreck, are the artistic team behind another recent Batman story that achieved great success, 'Hush', written by 'The Long Halloween's Jeph Loeb. The images are dark and dramatic, the colours vibrant and atmospheric; really injecting Miller's gloomy tale with life. This only being Volume 1, other characters are introduced and story arcs established that aren't concluded by the end (which I won't spoil by mentioning here), but the story of Dick Grayson and his journey to becoming the Boy Wonder gets as full a conclusion as such a story could hope for. Like 'Hush' and 'The Long Halloween' before it, 'All Star Batman & Robin' is set to become a benchmark for all other Dark Knight stories in the future. It's also an incredible graphic novel in its own right - electric in its pacing, full of drama and characterisation - and a must-read for Batman and comic fans alike.
