4 out of 5 stars Great Read   March 26, 2008
I liked the book & having read the first one in the series I felt this follow-up novel was a worthy installment in what I hope will be a bigger saga.
If you like your naval fiction or historical fiction then this is definitely worth a look. Lieutenant Fury is no Hornblower or Jack Aubrey yet, however, the character will grow on the reader. Not as technically correct as Patrick O'Brian, however, the author the author has written a good story.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read   February 27, 2008
I read the first book only by chance. A very good read, couldn't put it down.

I realise that second books can be disappointing but I couldn't fault it. Great story. Look forward to the next one.

4 out of 5 stars Waiting for the next one   February 13, 2008
I like Maritime fiction of this period being a big Fan of both the Bolitho and Hornblower series of Books.

If you like the Genre I think you will like this. The Characters are not fully developed yet as they are in the above two seroes, but I prefer it to the Julian Stockwin Novels.

Time will tell!

5 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable   October 2, 2007

I am a huge fan of this genre and, having read and enjoyed the first in the series, "Mr Midshipman Fury", eagerly awaited the release of this, the second book.

I enjoyed this immensely and thought the story quickly gathered pace and maintained it until the end, through a series of actions including ship to ship, cutting out parties, land raids and floating battery exhanges, all set amidst actual historical events (namely the occupation of Toulon). The thing that impressed me most however was that, while there is as much action as there was in the first book, the author has taken the time to develop the central character more fully, instilling him with fears, doubts and emotions which serve to endear him even more to the reader.

This is a welcome addition to the bookshelf of any true fan of this genre, and i am very much looking forward to the third in the series.

3 out of 5 stars Land Ho, nothing new to sailors   September 19, 2007

OK I'll admit it, I love a lot of the 19th Century Historical Fiction that's out there. So it'll probably come as no real shock that I picked up this tale about a seafarer. Unfortunately I really wish that I hadn't as it seems to be the cheap mans Hornblower without any real hooks into the world blending a touch of Cornwell into the mix without bringing any of his excitement to the tale. As a novel I suppose its acceptable however it didn't do anything for me and as such really didn't improve my mood as I struggled through the plot that seemed to wend its own way much like a slow river. No real destination appeared to be in the mind of the author, which really seems to be the biggest crime in my book and as such left me wondering what exactly the guy had in mind. Sorry to say but it wont be making my list of books of the year unless of course its going to be a hit list.
