A Useful Primer May 7, 2007 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
A generally well organised primer for those planning to take French to a serious level. The book is well laid out and the explainations are for the most part very clear.
There are one or two errors in the book (for example in the list of impersonal clauses that take the subjunctive - I hasten to add that my native French speaking teacher identified these, not me), but not significant enough to devalue it. The cross referencing is a little patchy in places and some of the exercises on the dry side, but then since when was grammar supposed to be fun!
The section on verb usage is mostly excellent but the section on pronouns would benefit from expansion and clearer examples. Overall though, a very good buy.
Excellent January 7, 2007 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
This is a really excellent book for learning French step-by-step. The explanations are clear and thorough, and it is logically laid out. I highly recommend it. The only aspect I found that was not quite perfect is the index - it isn't always easy to find something you know is in there from the index, but that is mainly because it is packed so full of useful information.
French Grammar July 29, 2006 14 out of 14 found this review helpful
This is a great book packed full of explanations and exercises to practise the key aspects of each chapter. The book is split into sections including verbs, numbers, adjectives, adverbs, etc. Each chapter starts with the very basic concepts on the grammatical concept and builds on this with relevant exercises until the next step is introduced. The book is well-structured and builds up information, layer upon layer and methodically. All the answers are at the back. This "workbook" is excellent for filling in gaps of knowledge and for refreshing your French grammar, or for someone of intermediate level wishing to reinforce their grammar and to learn more.
One of the best "help" books for learning french. September 7, 1998 18 out of 21 found this review helpful
Having studied french in France for almost one year, this book proved to be a life saver many times. It gives clear, comprehensive explanations (IN ENGLISH) of dificult french grammar concepts. It is a must for any serious french student.
