*Spoilers* August 20, 2008 Sometimes, in an 'epic saga', death is good.
I'm just throwing that out there because, really, just Irina? Really?
Aside from Meyer's reluctance to off anyone we give even the tiniest little anything about, I have no real qualms with this finale. Good prose, some good humour. My slight disappointment stems from the fact that I usually end a book with a that-was-one-of-the-best-books-I-ever-read glow, lasting for days, weeks or months (or even ten years and counting in some cases). The sort of nearly-there, close-to-a-'huh' I got from Breaking Dawn lasted about half of Tuesday. I completely agree that the already-too-vapid character of Bella was utterly drained halfway through the book; this made a (presumably unintentional) perk of having a substantial portion of the book narrated by a far more charismatic protagonist.
It was a pretty good ride while it lasted (although anyone with a weak stomach or plans to have kids in the near future: be warned); a good day's entertainent. However, in the spirit of absurd, take-credit-for-other-people's-work patriotism, 'America's answer to J. K. Rowling' left me feeling pretty smug.
Enjoyable enough but not riveting stuff. August 20, 2008 POSSIBLE SPOILERS!!! I stumbled upon the Twilight Saga a week ago and to be honest I would describe myself at best, a lukewarm fan. The biggest problem was the plot and the character development - there were times when it seemed that the author was stuck in a rut. I never really cared for Bella or Edward because of their lack of depth, my favourite was always Jacob and I loved Jacob's Book but I was quite disappointed with the final outcome of that problem. Everything in the last book seemed a little too perfect for my liking and I am quite a stickler for happy endings, even bittersweet ones. The bloodbath that I was expecting in the fight against the Volturi never came and the fact that it remained unresolved somewhat annoyed me. However, I did give it three stars because it was an enjoyable series and Stephenie Meyer did rejuvenate the vampire genre in a way that was original, so I have to give her some credit for that. But having said that, it isn't one of those books that I will go back to time and time again.
Enjoyable - but it still lacks a certain something August 20, 2008 Well what can i say ... when i saw the release date of Breaking Dawn i was devestated. I had to wait a whole month and a half!!! As soon as i first read twilight i was hooked, i absolutly had to read more and i got my wish with New Moon and Eclispe which delivered as well as Twilight. When i finally got my hands on bReaking Dawn i was quite frankly shaking with excitment and anxitey at the same time. I had seen all of the reviews on here. I didnt want to belive that the authur i admired most was getting so attacked by so called fans. Then i read some of the spoilers and well ... saying i was surprised would be an understatement. My first thoughts were "what the hell was she thinking". However i had to give it a try and i couldnt knock it until i had tried it.
So i dove strait in and i did end up enjoying it, it wasnt as bad as so many people had made out but it was still dissapointing. We know what sort of writing Stephanie Meyer is capable of. The book seemed like a collection of fan fiction that she had stolen of the internet rather than her own writing.
The plot seemed as if she had to finish in a hurry and needed to just end it so she resorted to old cliches. Where everyone is happy and snug and cosy. No one has to give up anything and no one gets hurt.
I guess you cant please everyone but it looks like that it what she has tried to do. She gave the fans of Edward his immortal daughter and wife. The fans of Bella got her best friend and edward AND a child. The fans of Jacob got to see him happy becouse he was no longer pining for bella and he is most likly the future husband of the girl he imprinted on.
Overall fairly weak in terms of plot. Now the charcters is what really made me want to stop reading, as with every page the charcters seemed to transform from the ones we know and love to these new charcters which seemed very OOC. They seemed to revert back to the cardboard cut outs off the stereotypical shelf. Bella swearing, Edward using modern sland?? What was going on.
So it was enjoyable, if you like the fan fiction on the various websites across the internet then you will like Breaking Dawn immensely.
Well done Stephanie Meyer for completing the series and the for fame you have achieved, unfortunately our imaginations have been slashed by the lack of effort put into ending this phenomenal series.
AMAZING!!! August 19, 2008 This is the best book I've read in a long, LONG time!! I have fallen completely in love with the Twilight saga. This is hands down the best one out of the four books in my opinion. Read it!!
And I'd thought New Moon was bad... (Spoilers) August 19, 2008 I've been waiting impatiently for Breaking Dawn to be released since I am a huge Twilight Saga fan. I literally counted the days for the book to be delivered at my place. The first book is indeed one of my favorites, while New Moon (just like the title for my review states) disappointed me largely. But New Moon seems like a really good book compared to Breaking Dawn.
**SPOILERS**
First thing that disappointed me: Jacob imprinting on Renesmee (or something like that). It seemed awfully wrong that Jacob imprinted on a child, it would be much better if he had fallen in love with Leah. It simply doesn't make any sense. Secondly, I had already read some spoilers that there was going to be a baby somewhere in the middle of the story so I was counting on it. What I didn't expect was that Nessie would be an adorable child, whom everyone just worships. It made me sick. No kid would be so lovely and adorable and charming etc etc. She just killed the book for me. And thirdly, that ending... I was expecting some sort of fight with the Volturi but Bella saving the day with her super shield was just ridiculous. I like happy endings but not like this one. It ended all to well for my taste. Bella gets everything: A beautiful husband, an "adorable" and powerful child, she's a strong and controlled vampire etc... What does she loose? Well, nothing. Such a selfish character deserved a different ending. Just 2 stars out of 5 because I enjoyed the part where the book was told by Jacob. Thanx for killing the Saga, SMeyer.
