Too little of too much August 29, 2002 50 out of 52 found this review helpful
Two significant problems I had with this book. First of all I think the author has tried to cover too much in too short a space and has skimmed over a number of situations you may need help with rather than give more thorough advice with a fewer number of scenarios. What is left is a book that doesn't cover enough of any area. I think Don would have been better concentrating on certain aspects of meeting people, such as strangers and casual aquaintences. I think there must be loads to write on that area alone.Secondly, I think there are some very significant differences in social behaviour between UK and US and this book is obviously more suitable for American readers. Some of the tips I would imagine are very useful but in the UK I don't think they would go down very well. Personally, I wish I hadn't bought it.
Not Impressed April 1, 2002 37 out of 39 found this review helpful
I bought this book as I may be considered to be a little shy when it comes to breaking the ice and meeting new people, but this book is aimed towards the socially inept of which I am certainly not. I was so disinterested with what this author had to say I gave up on it about 3/4 way through. My advice would be to buy "Conversationally Speaking", much better.
Smashing April 2, 2001 10 out of 15 found this review helpful
I bought this superb novel at an aiport before I went on holiday, I'm normally quiet a shy, introvert but this changed me a great deal-and for the better. Whilst on the plane after reading the book for half an hour, I started chatting away and made friends with the person sat next to me. I does exactly what it says-How to Start a Conversation and Make Friends, which is now why my address book is completely full. It's straight forward and easy to understand, a useful book. Essencial if you are shy.
Helpful for anyone who has trouble conversing September 5, 1999 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
This book gives you tips on what to do to start a conversation and be able to continue it. I have tried most of the suggestions and they work good. You should buy this book if you don't feel confortable talking to others.
Buy the book, not the tape. April 5, 1999 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Don does an excellent job in his book illustrating tips for starting conversations. But his tape misses alot. I would recommend his book, but then get Debra Fine's Tape on Small Talk, the two go very well together.
