2 out of 5 stars Too little of too much   August 29, 2002

Two significant problems I had with this book. First of all I think the author has tried to cover too much in too short a space and has skimmed over a number of situations you may need help with rather than give more thorough advice with a fewer number of scenarios. What is left is a book that doesn't cover enough of any area. I think Don would have been better concentrating on certain aspects of meeting people, such as strangers and casual aquaintences. I think there must be loads to write on that area alone.

Secondly, I think there are some very significant differences in social behaviour between UK and US and this book is obviously more suitable for American readers. Some of the tips I would imagine are very useful but in the UK I don't think they would go down very well. Personally, I wish I hadn't bought it.

2 out of 5 stars Not Impressed   April 1, 2002

I bought this book as I may be considered to be a little shy when it comes to breaking the ice and meeting new people, but this book is aimed towards the socially inept of which I am certainly not. I was so disinterested with what this author had to say I gave up on it about 3/4 way through. My advice would be to buy "Conversationally Speaking", much better.

I bought this superb novel at an aiport before I went on holiday, I'm normally quiet a shy, introvert but this changed me a great deal-and for the better. Whilst on the plane after reading the book for half an hour, I started chatting away and made friends with the person sat next to me. I does exactly what it says-How to Start a Conversation and Make Friends, which is now why my address book is completely full. It's straight forward and easy to understand, a useful book. Essencial if you are shy.

4 out of 5 stars Helpful for anyone who has trouble conversing   September 5, 1999

This book gives you tips on what to do to start a conversation and be able to continue it. I have tried most of the suggestions and they work good. You should buy this book if you don't feel confortable talking to others.

5 out of 5 stars Buy the book, not the tape.   April 5, 1999

Don does an excellent job in his book illustrating tips for starting conversations. But his tape misses alot. I would recommend his book, but then get Debra Fine's Tape on Small Talk, the two go very well together.
