A little bit lost October 5, 2002 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I think this book covers a fascinating subject, how our mind makes sense of the environment around us and maps familiar landmarks. It is written in an informal, approachable style, suitable for those of us, like myself who find complicated psychological topics a little daunting. Using his own anecdotes, Erik Jonsson progresses through different aspects of cognitive mapping. The book is surprisingly interesting, given what could be quite a dull subject. Although not a thrill a minute, it is written with gentle humour, and an appreciation that not everyone is willing to read long scientific explanations. The only drawback is the diagrams, which are unclear and roughly drawn. They detract from the overall presentation of the book and are difficult to understand, adding nothing to the explanations themselves. Other than that, this book sets out to do exactly what it says on the cover; explain Why We Get Lost And How We Find Our Way
