1 out of 5 stars Unprofessional and unhelpful   May 20, 2008
It was with a growing sense of unease that I made my way through Holmes's book, and for one simple reason: references are completely missing. Throughout the book, Holmes introduces countless examples taken from other researchers, and hardly ever mentions from whom the research is taken. If this book was presented at my university as an academic work, it would be disqualified because of plagiarism. As it is intended as a course book, the rules are a bit more relaxes so I will "just" call it very unhelpful. The reader who gets interested in any of the examples Holmes introduces will have no chance to go the actual source, as Holmes never bothers to give it. I've read literally hundreds of academic books and never once come across one that is as sloppy as this one. There are many better introductions to sociolinguistics available, such as Wardhaugh's book by the same name. It's somewhat denser, but at least it gives the credit where credit is due.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction   February 12, 2003

Yes, this book is written in a style and format that makes it a very good starting point for anyone interested in Sociolinguistics. The text contains numerous examples to illustrate points being made, and the writing itself is, mercifully, almost entirely free of jargon. I bought this book because it is one of the set books of my current Open University course, however, it is by no means a 'stuffy' text book and would be a good read form anyone who is interested in how and why languages change and develop. Don't know a pidgin from a creole? This book will explain it all in an easy to read and entertaining manner. If only all my course books were as informative and easy to read as this one!
