Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars A rather odd book   June 20, 2008

This is a distinctly odd book. John Savino seems to have impeccable scientific credentials but his co-author Marie Jones has previously written a number of books on religion and the para-normal. This may be why some of the chapters are more speculative than scientific. There is a whole chapter on the Psychology of Survival which includes sections such as 'Toba's Emotional Devastation' and 'Cellular Memory'. I found most of this very unconvincing and not really relevant to the main subject. The most interesting part of the book is about the effects on recent human evolution of the Toba eruption. The least interesting parts are those about volcanoes in general which you can get from any basic geology book.
The overall design of the book is poor with inappropriate use of fonts and illustrations which are often poorly reproduced or unclear. There is also a huge number of typographical errors.
You may well find this book very interesting but I think more rigorous editing would have produced a much better book. Worth picking up a second-hand copy or a remainder but poor value at full price.
