5 out of 5 stars Small, but perfectly formed   August 12, 2008
Nice to see Stuart MacBride try something different with this novella, a rather bloody American-set tale, as a bunch of hoodlums trying to track down their boss's daughter who has been kidnapped by a wacko.

Given the lack of novellas and short story collections being published it is good to see someone publishing this type of fiction. It is a much-neglected area in my view.

This book is SO unlike his other novels, I was deeply disappointed. I'm sorry to say that Stuart should stick to what he does - and knows - best which is Aberdeen. This book set in the USA is utter rubbish and I wish I'd never bought it. It's so short, I've seen magazines articles that are longer! Anyone could have written it, definitely not at all like his other books that are truly superb, sorry Stuart but this one lets you down very badly. If I'd read this book first, I'd never have read another Stuart MacBride book at all, thank goodness I read all the others first!

For his first foray out of Aberdeen, Stuart MacBride has chosen to take us on an American road trip with a team of gangsters tracking their boss's daughter, who has been kidnapped by a serial killer.

"Sawbones" shouldn't take long to read. It's a short novel, printed in accessible font, and it's a pacy chase for a serial killer that keeps you turning the pages as quickly as you can. It's deceptive though, as you will spend as long being consumed by great gales of laughter as you do actually reading what is printed on the page. A dark and gruesome novel, full of short (four-letter) words, that brings together the best of gangster tradition and Stuart MacBride's inimitable gift for creating great characters.
