An interestingly balanced view February 12, 2005 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
This book is a somewhat heavy, academic-style read, but if you can stand that it's worth the effort. Pleasingly balanced between the views of the servants and the views of the employers, it doesn't make many judgements and avoids the temptation to focus on the shocking (and probably extreme) examples to the exclusion of those who had enjoyed their period of service. It's well researched and draws heavily on some already published ex-servants such as Arthur Inch and Margaret Powell, but there's still plenty here even if you've already read their books. It was interesting and full of first-hand accounts from both upstairs and down, ranging from the grand country estate to the private middle-class household. I liked that it examined the whole century, right up to the present, instead of assuming (as some do) that the age of servants ended in the 1950's.
