It's not a horror film, but An Inconvenient Truth is certainly one of the scariest DVDs you could own. Presented in a straightforward format by former US Vice President Al Gore--think Royal British Institute lecture delivered with a Tennessee drawl--it sets out its compelling argument about climate change both methodically and entertainingly. Global warming is a real danger, argues Gore, and human civilisation is the root cause of it. A dizzying and shocking array of facts relating to carbon emissions, the population explosion and the disintegration of the polar icecaps all add weight to his thesis. Moreover, we're already witnessing some of the effects of global warming around the world, with an increasing amount of storms, droughts and other natural disasters, more in the past few years. But Gore doesn't present these facts merely to terrify the viewer. Instead, they're meant to shock us out of complacency and into action. Indeed, the film ends with some very simple ways we can all contribute to averting this impending global catastrophe. And that, argues Gore, is the point of An Inconvenient Truth. We have the ability to change our ways, what we lack is what Gore describes as "the political will." It is his hope that this film will begin to change all of that. --Ted Kord

Priceless kick up the backside we all need. June 26, 2008

Well done Al Gore for showing us what we all need to hear. Each and everyone of us can change the world for good or bad, the choice is ours and we should feel compelled to make our stand.

An inconvenient truth is what it's all about and it's time we all stopped hiding from ourselves.

This film is so powerful and a warning we should all heed. Not just for ourselves, but for our children, our families and our planet.

We all have a duty to spread the word and do what we can to help save our home. I shall be buying 100 copies of "An inconvenient truth" and giving them away to friends, family and colleagues.

Lets change the world before it's too late.

Winston Churchill once said
"The era of procrastination, of half-measures, of soothing and baffling expedients, of delays, is coming to a close. In its place we are entering a period of consequences."

In relation to another world crisis, but the words still ring true in our current crisis.

We need to stop supporting fair weather politicians without vision & balls to see in to our own future and act upon it.

Ignorance is no excuse in law, neither in life.

Al Gore has opened my eyes to the fact we have been duped for a very long time.

This isnt about politics or conspiracy theories and the world doesnt owe us anything. This is about us and our negative impact, and do we really need to be destroying ourselves like this? I dont and I am going to change what I can in all areas of my own life.

A great DVD, its not just a very good wake up call for all of us, but it is very interesting. I watched it twice and recommend it to everyone.

When I first saw this documentary I was fascinated and I believed that the world was on the wrong track and might be headed towards a major catastrophe. Today I am more sceptic and there are several reasons for this particulary turning point.

The documentary and almost apocalyptical warning to us humans, centers around Al Gore and his presentation of the rising Carbon Dioxide in the atmosphere which, according to him, leads to temperature increases. We are in other words talking about Global Warming. His messages clearly get through to the audience and his statements are well supported by graphs, pictures, quotations etc. or so it would seem.
Al Gore has a clear group of people that he aims toward whether we talk about his book, his presentation or DVD which are all coherent. It is primarily the American people and people who do not know much about global warming and the underlying mechanics that creates it. Al Gore very well knows that the average person does not know anything about the albedo effect or how temperature is being measured which leads to his very simplified explanations of the theories that are important for people to learn about so they can understand his statements. He is also quite misleading in some parts of his presentation. He has a clear message which is that people need to stop or decrease their CO2 emissions or it will lead to catastophies of unimaginable proportions. To prove that the temperature has risen he then says that ice core measures can be used as very precise thermometers. The really important point in all of this is that he neglects to say that ice cores can only be used to measure temperatures in a local area as opposed to a global area. This is quite significant because people can quite easily be led to think that ice cores are used to measure temperature on a global scale which is incorrect. Al Gore never claims that ice cores can be used to measure global temperatures but he never mentions the opposite either.
He very carefully chooses his choice of words to emphasize his points as well which again is a strategy to get his messages out to the public. Instead of just saying (in the book) "It is evident in the world around us that changes are taking place", he says "It is evident in the world around us, that very dramatic changes are taking place," which proves my point that he tries to dramatize, but also emphasize his points.

As said before he also uses quotes and in the book these quotes are written with very big letters because people have to remember those lines as they supports Gore's own statements. One of the things he also uses is the bibliographical genre which is used to build up some kind of trust and to get to know the person we are dealing with. Gore has been politically active and to remove some of the distrust that may lie with the public he uses the bibliograpical moments to assure that his motives are pure.
Last but not least... It was mentioned in the beginning that he aims toward the american society and more directly at the american community. He says that people stand before this great problem, but that it can be solved if they work together and united because they (the americans) have done so before. He then starts to give examples like when the americans won the space race agains the russians etc. This appeals to many americans because of the sense of patriotism that lies therin. And yes... Gore knows that.

To sum up:
Gore does everything right and does not say anything directly wrong when he explains the different theories etc. but there are misleadings and a lot of science is lost in his simplified explanations he does for instance not give water vapor any credit for being the most important greenhouse gas as it represents approx. 70% of the greenhouse effect.

It is still a very entertaining documentary and pleasing to watch, but it has to be watched with a critical mind...

A worldwide wake-up call and compelling viewing June 9, 2008
Packed choc-full of science, this documentary lays out the case for global warming and its consequences in a very watchable way. Al Gore is impressive in his presentation as well as in his passion for the subject. He's charming actually.

His message is simple: not one person who cares about the future of living things on our planet can ignore global warming any longer.

He presents some heart-stopping prospects if we do fail to act on rising temperatures. Most notably, if part of Greenland and Antartica's ice caps melt, sea levels will rise by 20 feet, submerging large parts of Manhattan, San Francisco, Bejing, Shanghai, and most of the Netherlands (to name a few spots).

There is more powerful evidence in the global increase of awesome hurricanes, typhoons and cyclones. As sea temperatures climb, so the storms become more destructive, generating strength from the rising hot air.

The 'facts' seem indisputable, though some people are still arguing about them. Either way, it surely can't do us or the planet any harm to try and live greener - more efficiently, more responsibly and more respectfully.

If Al Gore is right, then the above becomes more than just a nice, sensible idea. It become vital, our duty. The alternative - a world heated up so much that all our beautiful coral reefs die, hundreds of species are lost forever, swaths of fertile farmland becomes desert, cities sink under the water - is too terrifying to contemplate.

Gore may indulge himself a little in this documentary but I didn't mind. A visit to the family farm to learn how he spent his childhood may seem slightly off the point but it gives the film a nostalgic and personal hook, something warm and human to balance the science. He's showing us an old American way of life in lush rural country, and saying 'this is worth saving'.

There's also some commentary on his loss in the 2000 election to George Bush. He's obviously still sore, but the underlying alarm bell is that America would be a much more energy-conscious nation had he won. Instead, America is 8 years behind where it could be, still not signed up to Kyoto.

Arguably, thanks to the Bush administration we are closer to the precipice. As Gore says, every individual needs to act, but we also need political will.
