Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Interesting and comprehensive with reservations   May 7, 2008
I am studying an MSc in Renewable Energy, and out lecturer for biomass said he didn't recommend we buy any books on the subject because they were too expensive or didn't cover everything. I bought this one anyway and I thought it was pretty good. It seemed to cover just about every topic. It was quite readable. It's certainly an impressive bit of work. The writer knows his stuff. One thing I didn't expect were some of the in depth descriptions of technology such as the special vehicles for harvesting coppice or how a CHP station works. It seemed to be as much about mechanical engineering as bio-chemistry. I ended up learning quite a bit on power stations. I feel a bit rotten giving it four stars, but there was a sad error on page 15 which made me wonder what other errors there were. With all the controversy about biofuels, I wanted it go more in depth about how and what forms of bioenergy were justifiable. I also wondered how many of the case studies had actually proved successful. Our lecturer told us that sadly, most of them seem to fail. For example, one of the case studies described the ARBRE biomass power station in Yorkshire without saying that it closed down shortly after opening.
