A timeless classic! Easily the best social geography text around written in an engaging and accessible style with some great case study material. far better than Valentine's inferior text which goes by a similar title. A must for all undergraduate human geography students.

3 out of 3 found this review helpful

Introducing Social Geographies is a comprehensive book covering a range of topics integral to social geography. Aimed at the first/second year undergraduate, the structure of the book is one which is easy to follow, being split into (three) sections allowing easy digestion for any student who likes using his/her well invested books as beer mats. The book covers:

Introduction
Part 1 - Society, Material Life and Geography
-Work, class and social life
-The place of leisure
-Communities

Part 2 - Power Identity and Social Geography
-Race and ethnicity
-Geographies of Gender and Sexuality
-Age, generation and lifecourse
-Geographies of disability

Part 3 - Social Geography and Social Problems
-Society, nature and landscape
-Housing, space and society
-Crime, space and inequality
-Geographies of poverty

The book draws on the expertise of a range of Human Geography lectures interests, giving helpful and well illustrated case studies to back up the theories and concepts explained, emphasising the 'geographies' rather than 'geography'. An insightful and informative yet easy to follow text perfect for students being studying Social Geography(/ies), including topic overviews, summaries of key points, critiques and suggestions for further reading.
