5 out of 5 stars Great value for money!   May 31, 2008

This bok is bursting with interest and satisfactions, I loved it. As the other reviewers have already said, it really will keep you up at night. One point I'd like to add to all the other good reviews is that it made me think in a positive way about the character of the author more than previously. I admire the way he finds goodness and kindness in the worst of situations; from the prisoners he introduces you to, their families to their guards. The villains are pantomine in style and all the better for it. Easy to decide who to root for. I fell I know him better now in a good way; in producing this book from the bad times he's been through, he has taken the best from his difficult experience and generously offers it to us for our entertainment. Highly enjoyable, gripping and yes, clever.

Having only read Archers books about his time in prison,I thought I would try this novel and it was a very good read with some great twists to the story.

Highly recommend!

5 out of 5 stars Another Brilliant Yarn   April 28, 2008

What a storyteller this man is, starts the story and whisks you along for the ride of your life without letting on what is going to happen, keeping the plot togather right to the very end. A must read especially for all his fans.

You can't go far wrong in terms of plot if you update a classic, and here Archer gives us a modern version of Dumas' tale. Decent man is falsely accused and convicted of heinous crime, betters himself in prison and goes on to seek revenge on those who had him imprisoned.
This is a pretty good page turner which should be enjoyed for what it is; yes, the characters are all stereotypes and Archer has introduced some improbable elements to his version of the classic tale, but overall it's a good yarn. The court scenes in particular are well done and provide the most focussed and enjoyable scenes in the book.
There's no point being sniffy about Archer's work - if you're after serious literary fiction, look elsewhere. But if you enjoy a bit of reading for pleasure, this is a decent bit of light entertainment and there's nothing wrong with that.

5 out of 5 stars Best Courtroom Scenes Ever   March 27, 2008

This is Jeffrey Archer back where he belongs - on top. From the first couple of pages the pace rarely flags. The twists and turns are excellent. The worst thing about this book is it's length!! It's too long and too short all at once.

It will keep you up at night well past your sleeping time and you will want to get back to it first thing the next morning. But beware it leaves a big hole when you are finished. Be sure to have another book to hand because you will still want to read.

Can't wait for his next book.
