4 out of 5 stars Another great read   August 12, 2007

What a brilliant book!! Didn't want it to end, and can't wait for the next one. Have read all Karin's books and this one was definitely a page-turner. Definitely not for the squeamish. I couldn't sleep one night and read at least half in one sitting, which is very unusual for me. The ending was a complete surprise and can't recommend this read highly enough. I know some people didn't like it but everyone's different.

The same as other reviewers here, I have read all the Grant County novels and as crime novels have enjoyed them immensely, although I have to admit that Sara in the earlier novels just got on my nerves, yes she had reason, but I would sit while reading thinking "Just get over it or move on".

The crime part of this novel was not as interesting as previous books in this series and I know that "meth" is a problem in our society, but I didn't find it as engrossing a subject as in previous Karin Slaughter novels.

In the last novel Faithless, of which the crime part of the novel was extremely well done, by the end of the book Sara and Jeffrey had finally got happy, but the character of Lena I had lost all patience with "Is this woman ever going to help herself?". However even with characters who test my patience, I was still prepared on Saturday to purchase the book and read all day.

It was nice to see Sara and Jeffrey finally being happy, and Hank (Lena's Uncle) even at his worst I have always had a soft spot for, he always tries to look after Lena and he does it tough in this book. For Lena herself, again nothing positive happens with her character in this book her only saving grace is in the most awful way she attempts to protect Jeffrey and Sara and in holding Hank's hand towards the end of the book.

The ending was a great surprise and not of the pleasant variety, but all in all I've come to the conclusion in this series, that if any of the characters (including Lena in this novel reminiscing with a friend about her sister Sybil) have a glimpse of happiness, that it is fleeting and not allowed by the author.

It is for this reason I won't be reading any more Karin Slaughter novels and having read "the letter" after reading the book, which did not change my opinion of this book, even if the next Grant County novel has Lena winning lottery and marrying Brad Pitt it just doesn't matter any more. I'm through.

5 out of 5 stars Oh NO!!!!!!   August 7, 2007

Once again Karin Slaughter has gifted us with another page turner but THIS TIME.....crumbs! I certainly did NOT see THAT end coming, which is maybe just as well as I would've been quite upset w-a-y too early.

Gripped me as she usually does, kept my interest page after page as always and made me really concentrate when each chapter alternated between current events and what had happened in the days leading up to the climax. Always good to keep the grey cells on their toes I find.

Found myself holding my breath more than once when I thought various main characters were about to meet a grisly end but BOY oh BOY what a shock when the end to one of them came.....not going to say who it was but....you'll never guess so I suppose that means, you'll just HAVE to read the book.

Cannot wait for KS next offering, although at least I have a sneaking suspicion what the theme MIGHT be............But with KS....you never really know........

I've read all the Grant County series so far and really enjoyed the characters, well most of them.
This was no exception but I would have liked it to be less about Lena as she exasperates ME far more than she does Jeffrey and Sara!!

The plot was a good one and the way the chapters alternated between Lena and the investigation worked well. Unusually, I felt a little unsettled, sad even, all through this book and wasn't sure why but the ending was such a shock that I think Karin intended this book to have a different feel, and that how she felt about the story line herself came out in the writing.

It's hard to be honest without giving away the last few pages so I urge you to judge for yourselves and read Karin's explanation afterwards. For those who are new to Karin's Grant series, you really need to read them in order, starting with Blindsighted.

5 out of 5 stars Another gripping Slaughter reead   August 6, 2007
Karin Slaughter's latest offering does not disappoint. It has been described as bone chilling. From lawsuits to methamphetamine trafficking to white supremacy groups, with a bit of skeleton-in-the-closet thrown in for good measure, this one is full of suspense. We join our Grant County cast some six months on from where we left them in Faithless. Sara and Jeffrey are married, hoping to adopt child. Lena's violent boyfriend is in jail. The scene is Reese, Ga, Lena's home town, where her escape from custody after being found at the scene of an explosion leads Sara and Jeffrey become increasingly entangled in a web of nasty happenings. We get to learn a bit more about Lena's past. I won't spoil the ending, but I will recommend that you visit www.karinslaughter.com to read the author's letter AFTER you have read the book. It might help.............The bonus chapter at the website is also worth downloading. This was a real "can't put it down" novel, highly recommended. Can't wait for the 7th Grant County novel!
