light hearted and reassuring September 8, 2007 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
even for those of us with very little knowledge of French this book is good fun, and gives a warm hearted insight into the French --very reassuring for those of us who find them a tad scary!!! Nice christmas stocking filler for more competent french speaking friends.
Great fun August 20, 2007 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
A wonderful book full of useful information and delightful anecdotes. On every page you find something new, interesting and informative. A joy to read!
Relevant, useful, informative. August 12, 2007 11 out of 12 found this review helpful
So many books of this sort claim to teach you the language as it is really spoken and then fall short. This one delivers, and goes behind and beyond mere words. I haven't in the past come across any language primers that tell you what 'Angleterre' really means in French. Get the book and find out.
French Language Survival Guide August 12, 2007 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
This is a highly entertaining book, and is essential reading for anyone who wishes to get beyond the idea that Brits working or holidaying abroad will get by by speaking their English louder and slower! When, and when not, to use the words "baiser" or "impossible", the meaning of back-slang, how to organise the numerous public holidays that employees are awarded, what university you simply have to go to... One is almost becoming sympathetic towards the French when they are faced with idiomatic English. But that would never do! Well done to Mr Timoney on providing this guide to modern French "as she is spoke".
BEST BOOK EVER ON FRANCE AND THE FRENCH August 5, 2007 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
This book is essential for anyone who wants to improve their French or just be mightily entertained. Even if your French is A level standard or better you will I bet find words here that have always bewildered you. It helps if you are just buying a train ticket or dealing with a waiter and it also explains all kinds of things they refer to in French newspapers - like SDP (a homeless person) and the arcane details of the French educational system. It's like a cross between Lynne Truss's 'Eats Shoots and Leaves' and Peter Mayle. My favourite is what the French say when smiling for a photograph - they done't say 'cheese' , they say 'ouistiti' - which means 'marmoset'!
