Absolute Must Read- Its a shame Edward isnt real :( July 28, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
When one of my friends told me about this book, i was like werewolfs and vampires? But i gave it a go, and im glad i did, this book is incredible, a romance with a twist, what more can you ask for?? Edward Cullen--its worth reading this book just because of him!!!
Definantly give this book a go!! You wont regret it, no book i have read since compares to this series!!!!!!
Ok.... but there are better vampire/human love stories out there July 28, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
After all the hype and being a fan of vampires and love stories I thought I should give this a go. Basically - its OK. The writing style isn't great but perhaps this is the authors fisrt novel. It does feel a little like she has just finished her creative writing class and is thus overdoing the descriptive story telling a bit - there is just way too much of heroine Bella wandering around her house, cooking breakfast, sunbathing and responding too emails. Way too much detail and I think this held back the plot a little, as the story could have got going a LOT earlier. So, if like me, you are getting a lil bored of the constant descriptions of Edwards heavenly beauty - persevere. The story does get going two thirds of the way into the book.
If you like these sorts of stories then I would strongly reccomend giving LJ Smith's 'Nightworld' books a try. She builds a wonderful and complicated world and also goves your imagination a stretch. And when humans and vampires attract, there seems to a logical yet magical reason for it - not just 'smell' and 'beauty', like in Twighlight.
Disappointing July 28, 2008 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
I became aware of Stephenie Meyer when Time magazine compared her to JK Rowling. I started on The Host first, and love it! It is original, imaginative and has depth. So it was a complete disappointment when I finished Twilight, which was bland and hardly original. The relationship between the main protagonists appears to be very shallow. Bella is not very likable nor bright, and Edward is just bland, very pretty (as I'm constantly told by the author) but with not much of a personality. I'm wondering whether to read the remaining books in the series.
MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! July 27, 2008 1 out of 6 found this review helpful

Can you say, 'lame Buffy rip off'?? July 26, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
OK, now I am not suggesting that every vampire story is a Buffy rip off OR that they all have to live up to Buffy (which let's face it, is a pretty high standard). BUT because this book is about a vampire-human relationship, and because the target audience is teenage girls, how can we not think of BtVS? Although, the teens who love this are probably too young to have grown up with Buffy, which also kind of works with the 'rip off' theory. Anyway, I read this because I was stuck in airport for 12 hours and it was this or an old newspaper. I'm not criticising the style of writing or the author's skill as a writer, I think she's pretty good, which is why I gave it two stars and not zero. But that's the end of the good things- the story is dated, lame and so full of cliches that I groaned in almost every chapter. It also doesn't help that Bella, the heroine, is extremely annoying, all helpless and fragile and 'breakable' (groan), constantly needing to be rescued from Angel, sorry, I mean Edward. The connection or attraction between the two is never fully explained- though frankly, they are both such idiots that they're probably better off together. The rest of the characters are one dimensional cardboard cut-outs and after endless angsty romantic yearnings for most of the book (the phrase 'he thirsts for my blood' is actually used) we finally get some action. I'm not criticising the teen genre, and actually there is another one good thing, it does pretty realistically capture the depth of feeling experienced by teens and 18-19 year-olds. But the main plot is so over-done and has been done better so many times before that I just don't care enough to read the other 3 books. I think the author (who, again, I think is a good writer- and she likes Muse, so points for that) would have been better creating more backstory and fleshing out the mythical side of it, instead of giving us pages of two annoying people mooning over each other. My advice: instead of reading this, go out and buy seasons 1-3 of Buffy. Which is five million times better.
