Excellent read! May 4, 2008 I thoroughly enjoyed this book - even if I had to read some of it twice to make sure I knew exactly what had happened!
The way the plot developed was thrilling with many twists and turns. For most of the story I did not know whether or not to believe that the Perez boy was dead or alive. I also couldn't work out whether the guy in prison was innocent or guilty. I could have kicked myself for not having deduced the final revelation earlier!
The ending, whilst inconclusive, does allow you to imagine things the way you want them to be!
A thoroughly good read!
Witty, pacy and totally absorbing May 2, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
If you like the Myron Bolitar character that Harlan Coben has used so successfully in previous books then you'll like Paul Copeland. He is the same witty, nosy and confident hero that we have come to love and expect from this author.
Like Myron Bolitar his one weak spot is his family and in Paul Copelands life we have a complicated family sitation that forms the backdrop and is integral to the plot of this story.
This is a great pacy thriller. I was reading this at the same time as something slightly more high brow and I have to say that my other book got put to one side as this engulfed every minute of my free time.
If you like John Connolly or Mark Billingham as thriller writers then you will love Harlan Coben. This is a great stand alone book and brilliant for long plan journeys or lying on the beach.
Enjoy!
over-rated. April 21, 2008 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
This was my first Coben book and the only reason I decided to buy it was because of all the great reviews here on amazon. Maybe because the reviews were so good I had over anticipated how good this book really was going to be. Dont get me wrong, it is a good mystery book but I didnt find it very suspenseful and i didnt find the 'surprises' awfully surprising. Worth a look if you have the time and money but not worth going out of your way to buy.
From a Harlan Coben 'virgin' April 15, 2008 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
Wow!! My first Coben read and I was not disappointed. I couldn't wait to find out the truth behind the disappearance of Cope's sister, but really didn't want the book to end!! Easy to read, but not dumbed down, the plot is clever and intense - just what you want from a detective/thriller novel.
Have already purchased some more of Cobens 'stand-alone' novels and can't wait to get started on them.
Has to be made into a film...... April 9, 2008 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
'The Woods' is the first novel by Harlan Coben that I have read....it definately won't be the last!!
It simply is a fantastic read and a very easy book to get into. I'm not one for going over the whole story line in reviews, you can read that sort of stuff in the Amazon review/synopsis. So what I will say is that Coben has a real talent for creating interesting, believable characters and building gripping suspense, whilst at the same time finding time for moments of light relief and comedy, and some (albeit possibly predictable!?!) great twists throughout.
At the end of the book is the first chapter from Tell no-one which I shall certainly be buying very soon. This novel has been made into a film, and I believe that The Woods should follow suit, as if it fell into the right director's hands, it would be a great film as well!!
