Not as bad as people are making out July 28, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Perhaps it was because I had just watched one of the worst films from recent times (diary of the dead) and in comparison this was a masterpiece, but I found 10'000 BC highly enjoyable and came away happy with my buy. I can understand where the other reviews are coming from though as there were parts of this film which did irritate me, the psychotic man-eating Ostriches being one of them!
The main character is basically on a hunt to find his girlfriend and his tribe who have been captured by the 'four legged demons'. Only they have no idea where the 'four legged demons' reside and are unsure if the horses the 'four legged demons' have, can .... erm ... fly. So him and a few others that were left from the tribe head off travelling through mountains, forests and deserts bumping into the occasional prehistoric creatures and other tribes on the way.
Although there are a few far fetched scenes or situations in this film, the main storyline is still very good and believable and with some good acting from the MAIN characters. The last hour was probably much more entertaining once the prehistoric animals had stopped making appearances and the film could be taken a lot more seriously.
The main character is very likeable and some good acting from him, but some of the acting from the other characters like his girlfriend and few others while they are being whipped is bismal! Saying that they are supposed to be tough cavemen so maybe this was done partially intentionally.
Over all a really good film but I agree that with better special effects, some better acting and a choice of anything else except killer Osteriches would have made this exceptional.
Can't fault the action though, a lot of action in this and I didn't find this at all boring so I'm not sure where the other reviews got that from. I would recommend this as a good family film and not expected to be particularly strong or graphic like the BRILLIANT Apocalypto. If you like the idea though it's still definetly worth a watch as I did find it enjoyable to watch.
10000 years bc July 26, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
As i have just purchased this flim and just viewed it , i have come to the conclusion that you do not need any medication to help you sleep any more . One of the worst pre- history films i have ever seen ,since a film like 1,million BC which was made over forty years ago still deserves the right to be called a good film ie Dont waste your money
Waste of Time July 26, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Luckily for me I rented this film. The film starts off extremely slowly and remains at a slow pace this isn't helped by a very weak storyline. I had been so looking forward to seeing this film and was bored after half an hour but I decided to stick it out. The only advice I can give to anyone thinking about buying this film is rent it first that way if you find it as boring and as slow as I did you wouldn't have wasted your money. A very disappointed viewer. If i could have given this film a 0 out of 5 I would have given it a 0.
Could have been so much better. July 25, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I was exited about this film, and up untill last night i was looking forward to disagreeing with the vast majority of reviews I'd read. I really wanted to immerse myself into a film about a time so long ago, and I just couldn't, more specifically, i was never drawn in.
The problem for me starts with the director, with films such as Independance Day and The Day After Tomorrow, I kind of expected the movie to be more light hearted and cliche than not, but not to this extent. After watching films like Apocalypto, where I was completely immersed into the tribal culture of the central American tribes, where i really did care about the fate of the characters, the tribes of 10,000 BC were so obvious and stereotypical, I found myself not caring in the slightest.
Obviously some parts of this film were very unrealistic, but that never really bothers me, as most films are unrealistic. Its why we watch them, escapism. Because the acting and cinemaphotography was so substandard, it almost drew into the open every single imperfection about this film, and I really could not get into it. The love connection was poor between the two leads, I was unmoved throughout. The action, particularily the choreography, was really below par, not to mention predictable. I found myself telling my friend exactly who, how, and when someone was going to die, before it happened, and more often than not, i was spot on!
I really, really wish someone else had directed this film, because it should have been better, with the funding it had, the concept, everything was set for it to be great. And it wasn't.
To conclude, I would never say, don't watch this, but I will say, don't expect much. You may enjoy it as a kind of mindless spectacle, but it hardly makes you think, and it never makes you feel.
INFINITELY DIRE! July 25, 2008 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
I thought to myself, "Ah, a film about cavemen fighting woolly mammoths and sabre tooth tigers, now that sounds interesting!" Indeed, it should have been, but alas, it most definitely is not! What it succeeds in being, however, is one of the most incredibly dull films that I have ever been unfortunate enough to sit through! Bad acting, terrible direction, and an altogether weak cast doing their worst with a pathetic script, render this movie a 'must-miss'. 10,000BC doesn't so much rip off, but blatantly steals from Jurassic Park and Apocalypto (amongst others), whilst simultaneously managing to make you feel that you have seen this all somewhere before and carried out a hundred times better.
The trailers gave the promise of fighting cavemen, long-extinct beasts, and other exciting happenings- it all seemed so very promising- but this film fails to deliver on almost every single level! The script has all of the actors speaking perfect English with the most ridiculously obvious 'this is what cavemen might have sounded like had they spoken English' accents! Enormously insulting on so many levels! These accents did throw me somewhat at first as I thought this was going to be a much more authentic piece, rather than the perfect speaking 'Fred Flintstones' we were presented with here. Nevertheless, although their English was perfectly spoken, not one of these cavemen had anything of interest to say... ever! Furthermore, every new character (and I use the term lightly) that gets introduced into the lead characters' perilous journey was just as boring, nondescript, and insipid as the one before. The terrible acting is by no means all of the actors' faults. The majority of the blame has to lie at the door of its writer/producer/director Roland Emmerich. The script is dire, and the direction is poor at best.
The most ridiculous scene in this movie (and the point I started to watch the DVD in fast forward) was between the lead actor and a CGI sabre tooth tiger. It will be at this point, no doubt, where you are likely to reach for the stop button, thank Roland Emmerich for ruining your evening and wonder if there is anything else on the TV.
Don't get me wrong, I love a big blockbuster. I adore big mainstream cinema when it is executed correctly by the likes of Speilberg (Jurassic Park, Jaws, and Indiana Jones etc). However, this is the worst example of Hollywood at its most grandiose and sickening. I can only pray that the Hollywood Money Men see the light and never let Roland Emmerich work again because, in my opinion, `Independence Day' is starting to look very much like a `One Hit Wonder'.
Quite simply this movie is unmemorable, unremarkable, badly made drivel. Indeed, how this film ever got a cinematic release astounds me! I suppose they just had to try and claw back the `mammoth' budget somehow!
Avoid, Avoid, Avoid! You have been warned!
