A Wondeful Film June 28, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have wanted to watch this movie ever since it came out, and especially after I read the book. Although it is quite different from the book, which I love also, I thought the film was absolutely wonderful. I don't agree with anyone who says don't watch it because it is nothing like the book. a book i s a book and a film is a film. The book is brilliant, but the film is also brilliant in its own way.
I don't know how many times I started to cry in this film, I lost count. The acting is outstanding and the way the film is put together is really good too. you still get the escence of the book. Yes, there are some characters taken out, a different setting and it goes a different way sometimes, but it isn't the book as a film, it is a film based on the book.
So anyone who reads the reviews saying don't watch it, ignore them. This is a wonderful heart warming film, which you will need tissues for. I must say that this is now one of my favourite films!!!
NOT GOOD TO WATCH IF YOUVE READ THE BOOK. June 21, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I am so dissapointed by this film. Ive read the book about 12 times because quite frankly its one of the best books ive ever read. Cecelia Ahern is an amazing author. Sadly i didnt see this in cinema and couldnt find it online to watch first before buying so i bought it straight off. Thats such a waste of 12 When i first heard they were making it into a film i was so excited it was unbelieveable. When i read the book i cried with laughter on so many occasions so obviously i thought the movie would be able to make it 10 times funnier. In my opinion the movie is slow, hard to get into and the furthest thing from the book. I understand they have to make changes when turning a book into a film but they just took it over the top with this one. Was it really necessary to; completely change Hollys mothers name, reduce the family from 6 members to 3, miss out the lilo scene, set it in america, make daniel look like a homeless person, make holly seem like less of a grieving widow by making her sleep with that guy when she goes to ireland, make her mother seem evil and own a pub. Gosh! it annoys me so much. If they had stuck to the book alot more then everyone would have really loved it but i think they have ruined it for those of us who have actually read the book. And the woman who played Ciara couldnt act to save her life. I must admit i did laugh quite a lot at the lake scene (unfortunately that was my only laugh of the whole film) but i think the lilo scene would have been so much better. plus they didnt really make the girls that funny although lisa and gina were the best in the movie. I dread to think what it would have been like without them. Hilary Swank and Gerrard Butler were sooooo wrong for these parts. Even when reading the book i imagined Holly as a sort of Reese Witherspoon character. In the movie Holly seems to get over Gerry really quickly. If only i had the money i would re make this movie, making it as truly awesome as it should be. So to sum up....i thought it was not worth watching unless you want to be disappointed. i highly doubt ill be watching it again anytime soon. It is much better for those who havent read and are not planning to read the book.
Sloppy, romantic film, very loosely based on the book June 21, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The film is only very loosely based on the book which I had read first and thoroughly enjoyed. If you are hoping for something true to the book this will disappoint as it is based in America not Ireland and many of the salient threads are missing. It loses quite a lot in translation to film as of course do most books.
Taken at face value though I would say this is a fairly enjoyable, sloppy, romantic film that moves on apace after a rather slow start. I thought the story line was a little weak but OK. It is both funny and sad and probably really a chick flick. Possibly it's best to see this before reading the book. I would give it 7/10.
Terrible June 19, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Okay, so maybe reading the book first wasn't such a good idea but this film is shockingly awful. First of all they relocated it to New York god knows why, then changed most of the storyline. I was so bored during this film. And what was with the disastrous attempt of an Irish accent by Gerard Butler. Why not just make him american too seeing as though they already relocated it.
A great film in it's own right June 14, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Why do people expect film adaptations of books to be exactly as they interpreted the book? It just doesn't happen - look at Hunt for Red October, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings etc.
I loved the book and having read the reviews, I was a bit nervous about seeing the film but I'm glad I did. Like the recent remake of The Italian Job - suspend your expectations and just enjoy the film for what it is.
This is BASED on the book - it is NOT an adaptation. Hilary Swank and Gerard Butler are superb as Holly and Gerry. Yes it has all been moved to New York but it still tells a great story and in my mind, that means the film hits the mark. You cannot help but feel for Holly as she learns to continue without Gerry.
Best thing to do is curl up on the sofa, open that box of choccies and enjoy a superb film - just make sure you have a box of kleenex handy cos the tears will roll...
