1 out of 5 stars The only thing i liked about this book was the retro cover!   April 3, 2008

My mother in law bought me this book for christmas knowing that i am a serial dieter and always trying to lose weight. The first part of the book has a series of quizes and lists detailing high fat foods and how you can substitute them for lower fat alternatives. As someone who is very consious of the fat and sugar content in foods i didnt find this helpful at all. I dont ever eat crisps or savory snacks, i hate bread, never drink fizzy drinks and stay away from biscuits at all costs because i know i can resist them, so the substitutions didnt help me at all because i have already cut all those things out of my diet anyway. The only thing i do eat that is bad is chocolate!!! They have a recipe in there for chocolate truffles but there is no gain out of making them. it would be easier for me to break off two squares of chocolate and hide the rest than go through the process of making these frankly delecious and irresistable truffles that i cant stay away from!!!! The first chaper is on breakfasts but unless you rise at 5.30am or earlier there is no way you are going to achieve any of these as they are so fussy and complicated. Similarly the soups and salads have ingredients in ive never heard of which really put me off and i personally wouldnt got out of my way to buy bits of pieces of things for these highly complicated salads. I have tried a few recipes from the book and they were admittedly very nice but most are complicated with unknown or expensive ingredients. For anyone who has a full time job like me and likes to eat before 8pm in the evening this book is overly complicated and ambitious.

I was sceptical about this book initially, I don't think any diety recipe books have ever come up with the goods for me (ever tried making a fatless cake?) but the recipes I have tried from this book have been really very tasty indeed, even the egg and cress sandwich! The quantities made me raise and eyebrow, but they really do work. I'm very impressed and will be using this book for ideas for a good while yet!

I got this book off my friend two weeks ago as a birthday present and I think its great. Ive already cooked lots of things form it and loved it all which I wasnt expecting as I wasnt a veggie lover (not that this is a veggie book, I just wouldnt have cooked them into anything before). I've just taken Sophies lasange out of the oven to bring to work tomorrow and have a supply of Harry's chocolate truffles in the fridge. Everything is so yummy and simple to make and I dont feel like im missing any of the old junk I used to eat. I also dont seem to overeat as much as I often did before. (maybe because there isnt MSG in everything). The only probelm I'm having is that everything I make extra of for later in the week is being eaten my my mother and sister, which is a good complaint for the book I suppose. I was about a stone and a half overweight when I got the book and already I've lost 4 pounds, so its onwards and upwards(or downsizewords) for me. Start looking after yourelf properly and cook yourself thin. Get it quick! And and p.s. dont forget to write a sequel girls.

4 out of 5 stars Good food with a few wrinkles in the presentation   February 16, 2008

I bought this book recently. Probably for the same reason everyone else bought it: Chocolate Fudge Cake made with beetroot! Madness.

Though I'm not convinced that it will help me "drop a dress size" (as stated on the cover); however, I've managed to work out that I'm not exactly excessive in the calorie department (hence the doubt). I am thrilled to say that the recipe's are relatively simple and interesting, as well as being clear in regards to calorie content. If you didn't know already: the book is geared towards "calorie controlled dieting".

The biggest plus for me was that many of the recipe's are "serves 2". Considering that I mostly cook for myself because my partner doesn't like food like rice, couscous, or eggs, "serves 4" (or more) recipe's are often a huge waste of ingredients.

My problem with the book lies in its presentation of information within the first 63 pages. Though it was easy to find information about the average number of calories consumed by a "conveniance queen", the impact of a single blueberry muffin and latte from the average cafe, and how much you can hope to burn off with 15 minutes of jogging, it was not so easy to locate basic information regarding recommended daily calorie consumptions for men/women (by the way, it's in all the text on page 29. 2550 for men, 1940 for women...but you also need to account for stature).

I found the "food personality" test was a good way to waste five minutes in procrastinating from essential activities. However, I'd recommend avoiding it and just reading the information about everything that's bad for you because I felt it relied too heavily on you being a "type" of dieter, rather than just having a few bad habits that add up over a prolonged period of time.

With all this in mind, I will be making the Chocolate Fudge Cake....just as soon as I find raw beetroot!

I didn't watch their TV series but now I wish I had. I bought the book after seeing a show where they went head to head with famous TV chefs, cooking healthy versions of their recipes. I found that some of their tips and tricks were things I was already doing to try to cook more healthily, so I wanted to find out more.

The recipes are great, especially the Chicken Tikka Masala and I feel inspired to try others. This isn't just for people on a diet and it certainly isn't 'rabbit food'. It's clear and easy to follow and is written in a friendly style - I'd recommend it to anyone.
