5 out of 5 stars A Highly Informative Read   January 8, 2008

I was not a total beginner in the study of Islam's less endearing features but this book explained some matters that previously confused me such as the contradictions within the Koran and how Muslims could accept them, the book explained this and much more. The Crusades, are one example, being regarded as a violent aberration even by the most extreme Christian commentators, whereas the writer proves to my satisfaction that they were, by the standards of the time, a reasonable response to enormous and long-standing provocation. I cannot recommend this too highly.

1 out of 5 stars The Great Islamic Culture   November 27, 2007

I purchased this book to learn more about the Islamic civilisation and culture at the time of the crusaders. But on opening this book I was immediately disappointed. Instead of describing what is good and great about the Islamic culture Robert Spencer seems only to want to point out what is bad.

1 out of 5 stars Blog bigots best friend!!!   November 16, 2007

I have come across this books in a book store and read quite a part of it just out of curiosity. Over all this is a very nice book if you wish to have a nice background for your already fixed idea: "Islam is bad". It will definetly earn you a nice place in Blogs and Forum discussions. But for a student of politics, philosophy or Religion this book is nothing but a joke. It frequently refers to long abandoned islamic sources and Hadis (hadiths)(sayings attributed to Prop. Muhammed) which are regarded as made up. Yes they are present in the Islamic literature but the same islamic literature eliminated them long ago. Many quotes from Quran are out of context and this definitely is an indicator of a bad intention if not ignorance.

And the Attempt to white wash the Crusades and claim that they were acts of defense is not even funny. Crossing all the way from Europe to seize Jerusalem and pillaging the Christian city of Constantinople on the way is a defensive action... Wow!

Basicly perfect for a Blog bigot. Bad for anyone who really wants to learny anything.

1 out of 5 stars what a load of....   September 19, 2007

cow manure - if I wrote that the christian bible says "eye for an eye" would I be stating that the christian religion is evil and promoting anger and hatred or would I be misquoting out of context?

Makes a good door stopper or if you ran out of toilet paper though

4 out of 5 stars Sensible Man   September 5, 2007

I recommend this book particularly to those who are Muslim yet know little of Mohammed's actual behaviour and teaching. I bought this book with some trepidation, expecting a neo-conservative rant or perhaps some veiled racism. Instead I found a lucid, balanced, educated and educating book by a man who clearly risks being killed for having written it.This says it all.

Spencer's situation reminds me of the recent calls for Pope Benedict to be murdered when he quoted an ancient Byzantine emperor on Islamic violence. 'We are not violent' was the cry '...anyone who says we are should be beheaded!' This book gives cogent reasons why such doublethink is possible.
