Now really should be treated as a work of it's time, not this time..... May 9, 2006 21 out of 38 found this review helpful
In the late 70's, through to the early 90's, this book built up a cult following in middle management, as it was believed that it contained insights on how business, as well as war, could be conducted.
In reality, it is only of any use as a historical document that depicts how wars were fought - some not inconsiderable time ago.
It is not only a pointless read in terms of the business world, but also irrelevant for those wishing to understand how modern battles are conducted.
The content of the book has virtually attained the status of urban myth. However, in this case since it actually exists, a quick skim through will reveal it for the historical account it is.
If you really want a copy, then why not checkout ISBN: 1904633811 , which (for about the same price) combines both this book and "The Prince", by Machiavelli. The later does at least contain some insights into human nature which are still thought-provoking today.
A few grains of truth in a lot of chaff June 20, 2005 26 out of 55 found this review helpful
This issue the Running Press Book Publishers is the miniatures edition and can fit in your pocket. You can pull it out anywhere and look studious. Today many of Sun Tzu quotas are floating around mixed with Shakespeare and the Bible. And as with many of the quote they are out of context and misleading. The quoter usually thinks repeating the word is some sort of magic. It is easy with hindsight and a closer look at the future to dismiss Sun Tzu as his practical tactical knowledge is of a time and place long gone. He spends a lot of time on the use of weapons and information gathering techniques of the time. This can be interesting in a historical context; other wise it is quite amusing. Oh yes those grains of truth I mentioned, well they may sound like cliches but they are still viable. "Know your enemy and know yourself". Others are just practical sense and statistical outcomes that you learn in any military training. I could go through the list, but again that is why you buy the book. Now just as you decide that the book is outdated for any practical purposes today we have artillery and now stealth and precision, the reminder that "no two wars are alike" and "it is flexibility that makes a difference" is being shown today to still be true. Even in today's wars there is a need for good intelligence and deception. We put a lot of time and energy into Psy-Ops. Sun Tzu shows the advantage in specialized units and crack troops. I have spent several years in the military and in business and can say this book is a nice addition to history, otherwise of very little value to today's world for war. As a Project Manager I can tell you that this book has little value to today's business. Projects are about efficiency, cooperation, and ROI not war.
Timeless wisdom May 25, 2005 14 out of 19 found this review helpful
I'd compare The Art Of War to a compass, as in it is compact enough to be kept in your hand to use for guidance wherever you might be. Analysis of a contentious situation (whether in litigation, war or other dispute) along these guidelines can show you whether you should be choosing to fight where you are weak, etc. The principles it holds are of such general application it can be compared to the basic laws of physics, or suchlike. It should be of interest to anyone who considers themselves to apply their intellect to the world
Indescribable Initial Impression -----> My Military Minded January 8, 2005 17 out of 25 found this review helpful
When i first saw the size of this book i felt like i had been robbed. After my initial read of the treatise i was highly impressed at its "rules to war" if you like. Even though it was written over 2000 years ago it is still relevent today, which i think is absolutely astonishing. If you are business or money orientated then this book is for you. It is also good for improving military minded mentalitys.
NOTE - This is a Miniature edition January 29, 2004 44 out of 74 found this review helpful
This is not immediately clear, and despite the undoubted quality of the content it is definitely not worth €12.47 including p&p.
