4 out of 5 stars Cashing In or Not?   October 20, 2007

A book to make all the fans of Terry salivate at the thought of being reminded of their favourite books and quotes for as well all know, Terry fills each of his novels with classic lines that keep us all laughing. However that said it's a compendium of his best lines and if you already own all his books may not be something that you want to pay out for.

Its fun, with some nice touches such as a book mark with that old novel feel to it and is something that will be placed amongst all his other works, but on the whole it could be seen as a bit of a cash in by Terry's fans. However it might be worth considering though if you're trying to find a way to introduce someone to Terry's books and will make an ideal Christmas present for that ultimate fan.

I disagree with Mr P Bolt. I started like Mr Briggs with Mort, then read Night Watch, then went back to Guards! Guards!. It doesn't really matter where you start off at all. But I digress.

I've always loved the idea of a book you can just pick up and laugh at, and this is that book. It's superb, whether you've read them, and especially if you haven't. I've re-read the best lines, and keep looking through it. There's always one bit that you missed :D.

2 out of 5 stars Read the description first!   October 5, 2007

This is the second book by Mr Pratchett where I neglected to read the description!

The first was "The Science of the Discworld" which I'd assumed was along the lines of 'The Science of StarTrek' but which turned out to be far more interesting.

TWaWoD whilst strictly by TP is actually a compilation by Stephen Briggs of quotes from all of the Discworld books, (except the 'Science' series!).

If you haven't read the books, it's a good tatser. If you have it's a waste of money.

One major carp. Mr Briggs makes suggestions in the introduction as to where a new reader should start. There is no doubt about this: start at the beginning and read them in order of publication and note the reduction in the emphasis of magic as the series progresses.

Thereafter, read them as sets: Rincewind, The Guards, The Witches, Mort/Death/Susan, Moist, etc. Then re-reread them in subgroups. Then start writing annotated versions for future generations who won't be familiar with the early motion picture references or the 60's - 70's pop scene. Incidentally, why wasn't Susan Sto Helit named Margaret Susan?

Just today received. After starting to scan thru and ending up reading for several hours!
I love it. Brings to mind great characters and precious moments of each of the books.
Quotes are presented in chapters based on and named for the novel from which them come.
Paper edge is rough-cut to add to the antique look of the dust jacket.
Over-all, Very Nice!!!!!
