1 out of 5 stars Awful   October 9, 2007

As i needed to prepare for the UKCAT i thought it would be a good idea to buy a book containing practise questions. Although this book does contain questions written in the style of the UKCAT they are disproportionately harder than the real exam was.

After completing the UKCAT i got a total mean score of 580/900 with 600/900 being the average. After completing the practise tests i was shocked to find scores as low as 25%. The questions, which i'd imagine many people buy the book for, were ridiculously hard and created a large amount of unnecessary stress.

Even the section on personal statement writing and interveiw techniques repeat basic knowledge any medical applicant will have been told previously.

A waste of money, actually hindering preperation for UKAT due to stress caused by over-challenging exam style questions.

4 out of 5 stars Really?   August 22, 2007

Far be it for me to point out the obvious, but how can a person who has not read a book review it? I think people like yourself should firstly read the book before jumping to conclusions. The 2007 edition of the book was not written before the test came about.
There are very few UKCAT specific training materials available at the moment which is understandable hence anyone who is serious about medicine or dentistry should buy it. 12.99 for an increased chance of being made an offer, is this too high a price to pay? I think not

1 out of 5 stars Lacks detail   July 15, 2007

Book tries to cover BMAT & UKCAT in less than 150 pages for each.

Includes practice tests which are useful.Techniques for each section aren't particularly good or intuitive.
Your best off just picking the topics covered by UKCAT or BMAT and then getting specialised books on those (Like passing verbal reasoning tests etc).

Lacks detail and real techniques. Practice tests should be complete and not just half tests as time management is crucial in the exma.

5 out of 5 stars A,mazing book   June 20, 2007

I found this book to be very invaluable. Some people may not agree but I really think that all the sections in this book for the UKCAT test are very helpful. The 2007 edition is written informally, and to be honest some of the things mentioned just makes you want to laugh out loud. It may not gurantee me a place to medischool, but knowing that Iam armed with the knowledge of how to tackle the UKCAT test, and with information from the medical school interview books, am confident enough that I will not panic. Also, for anyone who is taking the UKCAT test, go to the website and ukcat website and check the sample questions, they are set exactly the same way (or similar0 to the ones you will carry out. Good Luck on your exams.

4 out of 5 stars Great book   June 19, 2007

I found this book invaluable when practicing for my UKCAT. It won't guarantee you a good mark, but aptitude tests are about natural ability and nothing can change that. However, it will prepare you for what's to come!
I feel that the examples here are better than the ones on the UKCAT official website.
And it has tonnes of other useful info about interviews, the statement, motivating yourself and above all else it had a good bit of humour which is great considering the CAT test is not the most hilarious extravaganza in the world, nor is applying to medicine in general (in fact it will probably mess your life up quite a bit!). I used this book in addition to the shorter "Getting Into Med School" and got an Unconditional Offer for Aberdeen- it was definitely worth a tenner for crying out loud.
And ignore that silly reviewer down below, they were doing CAT tests long before Med Schools decided to adopt them.
